Move OneNote notebooks from PC to OneDrive

The future of OneNote lies in the cloud. Microsoft has announced that the desktop version of OneNote 2016 will not get any new features. The developers focus on the OneNote app for Windows 10 instead. However, if you want to switch to the app, you cannot use locally stored notebooks anymore. This feature is not available there.

You can easily move your OneNote notebooks from your hard drive to the Microsoft cloud OneDrive. After that, you can continue to use them in the app, sync them with other devices such as smartphones or tablets and share them with friends or colleagues. In this blog post I will show you how to move to the cloud in a few simple steps.

Step-by-step instructions

Launch the desktop version OneNote 2016 in order to see all available notebooks. You get the full list under “Notebook Information”, if you click on “File” on the top left. Select the OneNote notebook that you want to move from the hard drive in your PC to the cloud. Click on the “Settings” box next to the notebook title. Choose “Share or Move” in the drop-down menu.

Now you can choose the cloud as the new location. You may need to sign in with your OneDrive account via “Add Location” before the little blue cloud icon appears on the left side.

Last step: If you click on “Move Notebook”, your pages and sections will be synchronized directly and will be available online then.

You can check whether the move to the cloud really worked. Open the OneNote app for Windows 10. At the bottom of the Notebook column, select “More Notebooks”. Your formerly local notebook should now be displayed at the top of the list.

If you select it, it will open and sync as usual. Even if your notebook is stored in the cloud now, the OneNote app always keeps an offline copy on your device. You can also access the pages and sections if you do not have an internet connection.

  1. I sincerely hope that the OneNote App will get an upgrade to include the current OneNote 2016 compatibility with Outlook such as copying an e-mail from the inbox and pasting it into a OneNote page, printing an e-mail to OneNote, Outlook calendar task links, etc.
